What can be done?
We need deeper investment in both the internet for all and digital public infrastructure. With shelter-in-place continuing, millions of us are at home. Those of us lucky enough to be able to work from home full-time are doing so, while many children are struggling through Zoomschooling. It’s hard to argue now with the idea of the internet as a public utility when essential things such education and safe food ordering rely on it; without equal access, our society is becoming even more unequal.
Disinformation dominated the online conversation in the US with groups like QAnon spreading conspiracy even among the highest spaces of power while online platforms shied away from intervening.
