What can be done?
We need to make access to the internet a public good, available to all sections of the population. The control of the internet by authoritarian governments or private companies, without accountability to the ultimate users, deprives several sections of the population — like socio-economically disadvantaged groups, women, and people living with disabilities — of access to the internet.
Internet shutdowns in India demonstrated how harmful government restrictions on internet access are to people's lives and livelihoods, especially in the wake of COVID-19.
