Wafaa is an Egyptian independent journalist based in Berlin, working at the intersection of technology and human rights. She’s a passionate defender of women’s rights on and offline, and an active member of the Internet Freedom Festival.
What can be done?
We need a feminist internet and we need to look into how the internet is being misused to threaten women and non-binary people around the world. We need to focus on online violence and hate speech based on gender around the world.
The Egyptian government used Cybercrime Law to target women using social media, accusing them of bogus crimes like "destroying Egyptian family values" for dancing and singing in the videos.
